PLANTING & CARE

CHAMPLAIN VALLEY CEDARS IS NOT CURRENTLY OFFERING INSTALLATION AND PLANTING SERVICES.  WE CURRENTLY ONLY OFFER RETAIL SALE OF TREES.

Following these planting instructions is vital to the success of your cedar trees.

Planting and care instructions:

*Dig a hole 2-3 inches deeper and wider than the root section of your cedar tree that you receive from us. We recommend using a rototiller to break up the soil and to dig a trench for the trees.
*Fill the hole or trench with 2-3 inches of peat moss.
*Thoroughly wet & soak the peat moss in the hole or trench with water. This is to force the air out.
*Put the root sod into the hole or trench and position the tree the way you want it to stand.
*Cover the root sod with soil and gently, but firmly, pack the soil around the tree with your feet.*Set up a soaker hose and water for 2-3 hours in the early morning and evening for the first 8-12 weeks. Continue to water the trees about every other day during dry periods for the first 2 years.

*Place 3"-4" of mulch on top of the soaker hose and along the line of the trees.

*In the Fall add additional mulch around the tree.
*Trees don't need additional fertilization beyond the peat moss mulch.
Five months after installation you may add © Miracle Gro plant food and or bone meal to enhance the growth rate.

[ VT has recently passed law restricting/reducing Phosphorus runoff into waterways, utilize highest Phosphorus rate available by law]

FERTILIZATION

1) Fertilize your cedar hedge in the early spring when flowers and plants are blooming. Use a 30-10-10 water-soluble (or similar high Phosphorus) fertilizer on the soil around the hedge.

2) Water the hedge immediately following the fertilizer application.

3) Repeat steps 1 and 2 in April, May, June.

The fertilizer should be applied 3 times during the growing season for best results.

Refrain from fertilizing the hedge in late summer, as the hedge will require rest for dormancy during winter.

However, it is recommended that you apply a slow-release nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer in the late fall as a hedge "health boost" for spring.
