What is the difference between your native and nursery pruned trees?
Native trees are open field grown but not pruned. Nursery grown and pruned trees are pruned every year to cause them to be more full when installed. How far apart should I plant my trees?
We have had the most success when spacing our 3-3 1/2 foot trees 20 inches apart. You can space them as close as 12 inches apart to create a denser hedge faster. 5 to 6 foot cedars may be spaced from 20 to 30 inches apart depending upon how dense you want the hedge the day they are installed. If you don't want a hedgerow but do want a future windrow they may be spaced 5-10 feet apart.
What should I fertilize my cedars with?
Do not use evergreen fertilizers or spikes. We use recommend © Miracle Gro plant food 15-30-15 and /or bone meal. But, higher potassium (the middle number of the 3) in fertilizers is now legislatively restricted in bulk in Vermont. 10-10-10 fertilizer are generally safe if applied April/May/June around the trees drip line after the tree is established. A time release fertilizer is great as an early Fall supplement.
